Erfahrungsbericht eines Kursteilnehmers über die "Munyer Methode"

The entire evening was devoted to a discussion and demonstration of the type of somatic healing/discharge work Arthur Munyer (Shambho) has developed called the Munyer Method™ in conjunction with his Trigger Point, Esalen Bodywork and various somatic release modalities.
Shambho explained how his approach evolved after many years of bodywork therapy of various modalities (structural Integration, deep tissue, emotional release disciplines, yoga, shamanic awareness, etc.) and psychotherapy (including Gestalt). He wanted a modality that would include both the physical and the psychological. The method he teaches is based on the assumptions that:
we have all been "traumatized" to some extent by our lives as human beings;
that these trauma/energies are stored in our bodies,
that unless allowed to discharge and release, these traumas become dysfunctional or pathological; and, perhaps most unique,
that the body will organically discharge the energies associated with these traumas IF it is allowed to.
Shambho demonstrated the method with 4 different men during the evening. The process in all cases involved:
pre-orientation (visual) to one's physical surrounding;
a dialog that leads the body into a relaxed and safe state;
the revealing of a particular body gesture or motion (moving a foot, hand, head, shoulder etc..) which, when concentrated on and slowed down to micro-movement while allowing any thoughts/feelings/images that might emerge simply flow through the mind, leads into deeper and deeper meditative and relaxed states, which then
allows the body to discharge trauma energy. There is a final post-orientation, in which the changes that had occurred were acknowledged.
The process is extremely subtle. During the initial dialog, Shambho led the conversation into positive areas, instances of experienced love or joy, rather than negative memories of painful experiences. This allows the body to feel safe/trust and begin to reveal itself. Mind and ego have to be displaced in order to allow the body to "speak" however it cares to. The stories of our remembered experience become irrelevant as we move into contact with the body's stored memories. The gestures which provide the portals to healing are unconscious and cannot be intended or planned. Shambho's role was to be present with the subject and wait for and recognize the appropriate gesture or movement to use as the portal to discharge. Once begun, he provided a gentle and encouraging meditation, with a great deal of allowing, as the body began to unwind these traumas stored in it tissue. Sensations experienced included heat, sweating, shaking, sounds, and changes in breath and posture.
Each person’s experience was unique, though everyone experienced discharge and a reported shift in perception/feeling to a greater or less degree. In private sessions, Shambho would then move into different forms of bodywork modalities to support the bodies desire to release its trauma energies, with the body now in a very open, relaxed and healing orientated state.
Shambho explained that his role was to spot the body's 'signal' gesture and guide the process so that the body could do it's own healing work. When asked if this process were something someone could do for himself or herself, he explained that it would be very difficult, given the need to escape the controlling mind/ego in order to tap into the body's signals. However, he has offered to teach us how to do this work with each other, and the group is considering how we might engage him to provide this sort of instruction.
